Allusional Vessels Pottery has long been relegated to the lower status of Craft in modern culture, which I decided to contend by elevating it as a representation of Art. I draw inspiration for these handbuilt works from the many vessels depicted in Art as still life observation, prop or ornament. I take a vessel out of an image in a still life painting, drawing, cartoon, photograph or from my own observation and build it in flattened sculptural form. I then paint the front surface, applying principles of 3dimensional depth as if on a 2dimensional plane, in the style of the original artist. Making that which was first 3dimensional, depicted in 2dimension, 3dimensional again. |
