Profile
I was born in Australia and brought up near London, UK by bohemian-beatnik artist parents in a painting and sculpture-filled house during the 1960s and 70s when retro design and victorian printing techniques met avant-garde ideas, so I didn't stand a chance. I saw my first Bridget Riley painting aged 5 years and it was huge.
I have an innate grasp of perspective and could draw before I studied at a ceramics course specialising in functional thrownware. My tendency to perceive in 2dimension, which I applied to the 3dimensional form, led to experiments of illusion in perception and manipulation of perspective by the distortion of thrown forms. I also made figurative slab-construction and the first mirage vase.
My background is in graphic and illustrative art, also have been a print-tinter, mural painter and signwriter. Earning my living 'by the brush' in this way has trained me in techniques of creating 3dimensional illusion as well as giving me experience in brushwork and observation.
Drawing on these two disciplines has led to my work existing somewhere in between painting and sculpture.
