Mirage vases
I make my pottery by applying the principles of 3dimensional perspective drawing and painting found on the 2dimensional plane, to a flattened 3dimensional cast form. I build as if drawing a vessel 'in the air' and use conventions of light, shadow and perspective to decorate it as a painting. I work in monocular vision to reduce depth perception so the illusion is enhanced when viewed with one eye shut.
The vase is a drawing or painting of itself and like a picture, has an ideal viewpoint.
I reference form and pattern from the era of machinery, modern, retro or traditional art, comic book, cartoon and graphic art, optical illusion, print, textiles and nature. I imitate the precision and repetition of mass production by hand.
With the participation of the viewer's perceptual expectations of objects in space, I aim to create a brief belief in the illusion of roundness.
